  Anti-Spyware Guideline

With the increased reliance on Internet connectivity, anti-spyware software is necessary to protect a computer. The most common way spyware (also referred to as malware, adware or parasites) infects a computer is while users install software that claims to be free, beneficial, or entices a user to perform an action, but which does not reveal that it also contains spyware. 

This IT Policy, and any other policy referenced herein, shall apply to all members of the University community including, but not limited to, faculty, students, administrative officials, staff, and independent contractors (hereinafter the “User(s)” or “you”) who uses, accesses, or otherwise employs, locally or remotely, the University’s IT Resources, whether individually controlled, shared, stand-alone, or networked.

  • Report any suspicious activity to IT Customer Care at 718-817-3999 (internal extension 3999) or e-mail
  • These guidelines will assist University faculty and staff in detection and removal of malicious spyware or adware software on University computers as well as on their personal computers. Departments and individuals must call IT Customer Care at 718-817-3999 (internal extension 3999) before adjusting the web browser security settings to determine whether you have the most up-to-date version of the web-browser. Instructions for adjusting web browser security settings are available at: 
  • Never download anything from any site unless you know that the site is trustworthy. If in doubt, do not download and do not open attachments or click on any links. Call IT Customer Care at 718-817-3999 (internal extension 3999) if you have any reason to doubt the trustworthiness of a site. 
  • Never check the “Always trust” option for any site that requests access to your computer. Even on trusted sites, do not check the “Always trust” even when the pop-up box contains the phrase “Recommended.”
  • Look for signs of spyware or adware on your computer.  Spyware may or may not readily make its presence known, while adware, by definition, is very noticeable. However, both types of software often have adverse affects on computers and users.
    • Numerous unsolicited  advertising pop-ups appear
    • Pop-under advertisements, advertisements that show up after a browser window is closed
    • Sluggish computer performance may be a sign of the presence of spy-ware or adware
    • Multiple unrequested browser windows appear  in the taskbar
  • Additionally, users connecting to the internet via dial-up modem or to chat or other services providing connectivity should be on the lookout for
    • Unrecognized long distance telephone charges
    • Indications that their modem is busy or connected when the user knows the computer is not or should not be online
  • Use a tool to help detect and remove unwanted software.  Spyware can be very difficult to detect and remove. If you believe that your computer may be infected, call IT Customer Care for assistance at 718-817-3999 (internal extension 3999).  There are software packages available to assist in detection, removal, and prevention. To keep up with the latest spyware, these programs must be kept current. Several packages users have found to work well are
    • Spybot Search & Destroy – Spybot S&D is free for all use, including use on both University and personal computers
    • AdAware – AdAware is free for personal use; however, University computers are required to have a paid license
    • SpywareBlaster – SpywareBlaster is free for both personal and University use
