Class of 2013 Arrives at Fordham

There’s not much moving on an early Sunday morning in New York. But at 8 a.m. on Aug. 30, Fordham’s campuses in Manhattan and the Bronx were a flurry of sound and motion.

That was the day members of the Class of 2013 officially became part of the Fordham community—and what a welcome they received.

Fordham Raises $72 Million for Record Year

Despite the unsettled economy, Fordham realized another record-breaking fundraising year—its fifth in a row, raising $71.9 million in gifts and new pledges for an increase of 6.5 percent over the previous fiscal year. As of July 1, Excelsior | Ever Upward | The Campaign for Fordham has raised $277.9 million of the $500 million goal.

“I cannot give enough credit to the campaign volunteers and staff,” said Al Checcio, vice president for development and university relations.

A Night for Old Friends
and New

Timothy Dolan, archbishop of New York, was the guest of honor at a reception on July 20 that included some of New York City’s top dignitaries.

The event, held in the 12th Floor Lounge at Fordham’s Lincoln Center campus, was hosted by Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Sister Anne Marie Kirmse, O.P., Ph.D., brightens her tone when she recites an anecdote about Avery Cardinal Dulles, S.J., Fordham’s late Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society:

One day in 2002, Cardinal Dulles asked her to find an envelope in his files on which he’d written a reference. He’d jotted down the note while attending a talk in Washington, D.C. on a very warm day sometime in the 1960s. Now, he wanted the reference for a lecture he was writing.
