State of the University: Sound

Joseph M. McShane, S.J., president of Fordham, delivered an upbeat State of the University Address at Faculty Convocation on Thursday, Sept. 14, in the McGinley Ballroom on the Rose Hill campus. In admissions and fund raising the news was overwhelmingly positive, and the University’s intellectual health is vibrant, if underappreciated by some media who rank universities.

University Dedicates Fordham
Regional Parking Facility

The long-awaited Fordham Regional Parking Facility, servicing both the University and the local community, is open for business.

Bronx leaders joined with the Fordham community on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 9, to cut the ribbon on the brand new parking facility. The five-story garage, built adjacent to O’Hare Hall on what was the University’s south parking lot, has the capacity to house 1,546 vehicles and will be completed prior to the Christmas holiday this year, though three stories of parking are available for use now.

Law Panel:
Legal System Has a Long Way to Go for the Poor

Two years ago, on the 40th Anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, a landmark decision that established the right to adequate counsel for people held in criminal cases, the National Committee on the Right to Counsel was founded to examine whether defendants who cannot afford to hire a lawyer receive competent legal representation. The committee was also charged with recommending reforms. A Fordham Law School panel held on Thursday, Sept. 14, suggested that there is still a great distance to go: some of the country’s poorest citizens facing criminal charges are still denied the right to an adequate defense.
