Record Giving and New Scholarships
Give Fordham Athletics a Boost

The Fordham water polo team, which closed its season with a 12-6 win over Queens College on Oct. 20, will begin offering athletic scholarships for the first time beginning in fall 2005. The scholarships will be awarded to student athletes thanks to an endowment created with money raised during a matching gift challenge initiated by Fordham Trustee Nicholas “Kola” Romano (CBA ’89). The effort raised a total of $205,000, and follows a similar challenge offered by Romano in the previous year that generated more than $50,000 for the water polo team.

“The ability to attract top student-athletes will serve as a catalyst for Fordham to have a competitive water polo program and to ultimately position itself among other top-tier schools such as Stanford and Princeton,” said Tim McMahon, director of development for athletics at Fordham.

The new endowments come on the heels of a record year of giving for Fordham Athletics. More than 1,200 alumni, parents and friends contributed more than $1.4 million in fiscal 2004, a 10-percent increase over the previous fiscal year. Cash giving was up more than 13 percent for a total of more than $1 million. President’s Club gifts of $1,000 or more totaled 218, with 62 people making gifts at the Lombardi level of $5,000, more Lombardi level donors than last year.
