Former Trustee Poses Alumni Challenge

Robert E. Campbell (CBA ’55), who chaired the Fordham Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1998, upped his jubilee challenge to fellow alumni after his initial challenge was met. In celebration of his 50th Jubilee at Fordham, Campbell challenged alumni to match his gift of $100,000. When an anonymous donor responded immediately with a $100,000 contribution, Campbell offered to match alumni gifts two to one.

Campbell’s ties to Fordham are deep. In addition to serving on the board, he chaired the search committee that led to the selection of Joseph M. McShane, S.J., as president of Fordham University. He was active in the construction of McMahon Hall on the Lincoln Center campus and donated $1 million for construction of the Walsh Family Library atrium.

“I always feel like you should go to something and not away from it,” said Campbell, who spent his entire professional career at Johnson & Johnson. “In deciding what you want to do, you should find a way to bring value to the cause and to yourself.”

In 2002, Campbell’s additional million-dollar gift established the Robert E. Campbell Endowed Scholarship Fund. The first Campbell scholarship was awarded this year to Theresa Dean (FCRH ’08). Campbell and Dean will meet for the first time in April at the Scholarship Donors and Recipient Reception to be held at the 21 Club.
