Fordham University’s Poets Out Loud series, which features readings by noted and emerging poets from around the country, will launch a new season on Monday, Sept. 24, with poets Charles Bernstein and Rachel Blau DuPlessis. Ph.D.

Bernstein, the Donald T. Regan Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania, and DuPlessis, professor of English at Temple University, will read their poetry at the 12th-Floor Lounge in the Lowenstein Center on the Lincoln Center campus at 7 p.m.

Over the years, the series has hosted a number of renowned poets, including Gwendolyn Brooks, Mark Doty and Derek Walcott. Poets Out Loud was started in 1992 by a small group of faculty, staff, students and alumni as a way to address a lack of an established poetry reading series in the Lincoln Center area of Manhattan. The group’s mission is to bring a public audience to the Lincoln Center campus and to foster the appreciation, creation and study of poetry both within the University and in the wider New York City community. Since its inception, the series has grown from two readings a year to a full schedule of events throughout the academic year.

Poets Out Loud also awards the annual Poets Out Loud Prize, which carries with it a $2,000 award and publication by the Fordham University Press. The 2006-2007 recipient was Darcie Dennigan, whose poetry has been published in journals ranging from the Atlantic to the Black Warrior Review. The deadline to apply for the 2007-2008 Poets Out Loud Prize is Nov. 15.

Founded in 1841, Fordham is the Jesuit University of New York, offering exceptional education distinguished by the Jesuit tradition to approximately 15,800 students in its five undergraduate colleges and its six graduate and professional schools. It has residential campuses in the Bronx, Manhattan and Tarrytown, and the Louis Calder Center Biological Field Station in Armonk, N.Y.
