The meeting was convened by John P. Harrington, Dean of Arts & Sciences Faculty, at 10:03 A.M.

Approval of the Minutes
The minutes of meeting #66 on 04 December 2013 were approved (19-0-3).  In addition, Dean Harrington reminded the Council of the new voting membership of additional interdisciplinary programs and informed the Council of the deliberations of the ad-hoc committee to review simultaneous registration.

Report of the Core Curriculum Committee
Prof. Hume reported that he had an updated report from the committee that included the approval of 3 additional EP courses (revised report attached).  He also discussed the status of the work being done by the subcommittees, with the assistance of Jeannine Pinto, on assessment of the Core.  The report was accepted (25,0,1)

Report of the Majors and Curricula Committee
There was no report.

Report of the Nominations Committee
There was no report.

Faculty Evaluation Committee Report
There was no report.  Dean Harrington again stated that this committee needed additional members and still had no chair, which was hampering work on reviewing the implementation of the on-line SEEQs, now in their 3rd semester.  Note: later in the day, Monika McDermott (Political Science) accepted the position of chair for this semester.

New Business
There was no new business.

Provost, Dr. Stephen Freedman
Dr. Freedman discussed the future of Arts and Sciences at Fordham, asking for and receiving input from the Council members.  He indicated that he would be continuing this discussion at the next Council meeting, and that information discussed today should be shared with department faculty.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 12:00 P.M.

The Core Curriculum Committee, via email, discussed the reports of the Core subcommittees on expedited course proposals that were submitted before the January 15 deadline.  The subcommittee reports were complete in their details, and the CCC voted to approve the following courses after careful review:

2.    Assessment

In its report from November 25, 2013, the Core Curriculum Committee outlined its proposal for assessing the core.  The CCC began to discuss strategies for implementing the proposal in its meeting on January 29, 2014.  The Chair of the CCC proposed meeting with department chairs at the Chair Development Conference in Summer 2014 in order to solicit feedback on whether the Core is achieving its goals.

On February 11, the Chair of the CCC and the University Assessment officer met with the chairs of the Arts & Sciences Council Core Curriculum subcommittees. The subcommittees were tasked with developing a plan to assess their respective components of the core, with a first round of assessment completed by Spring 2015.

In the near term, the committee’s priority is EP assessment.  The University Assessment Officer, together with the chair of the EP subcommittee, is working with a team of faculty and administrators from Rose Hill and Lincoln Center to coordinate assessment efforts between the two campuses.  They are developing a joint plan for review of student work synthesizing the work that has already been conducted on each campus.  The intention is to have finalized these procedures and begun scoring student work by the end of May 2014.
