Melissa Whalen's research focuses on the ways in which key figures in the Romantic-era theatre world struggled to improve the contemporary stage and exploit the theatre as means of educating the public. Her article, The Suffering Stage: Joanna Baillie, Spectacle, and Sympathetic Education has been accepted for publication in European Romantic Review
